Evaluation Questions!

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

During all of this work we have used a lot of different technologies.
We used cameras, to film and take photos for our ancillary tasks, we didn’t use any effects when using the camera we just thought about different types of shot etc.

We used photo shop to edit our photos for our ancillary tasks, this gave us a great chance to really get going with special effects to make our photos look as good as they possibly could for example Danny had bad skin in the picture and therefore we had to clean it up.

When editing and producing the video itself we used I Movie HD, this allowed us to use many effects such as speeding up scenes, slowing down, adding contrast, cutting unwanted scenes etc. This was probably the piece of technology that we used most within this whole piece of work.

Blogspot is the programme that we have used the whole time in which to add all of the information we have found out along the way, we have used it to give people a preview of our ideas, to show final pieces and also as a kind of bibliography for research in which we have found.

We have used power point to process a slide show evaluation, in which we presented in front of our class, this slide show was an evaluation of our work, powerpoint proved good when making a slide show although it isnt a very advanced piece of software., maybe prezzi may have been a better option for us.

We’ve used the internet throughout to find out a lot of info on our artist etc, we have used it to compare our video to others, but also to get simple things like images for our blog etc. The internet is another big part of our work as without it most of the technology we used wouldnt have worked such as our blog, we wouldnt have been able to use facebook or youtube to get responses on our video, therefore we would never know what people thought of our video.

Evaluation Questions!

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

When designing and making our ancillary tasks we tried to think a lot about the mes en scene in which we had used in our video, we thought about different types of shot, such as long shots, close ups, this was because we wanted the ancillarys to be as effective as possible.
We also decided to use a picture for an album cover where the actor is holding a cigarette, we feel this is effective when linking it to the video because it gives the whole thing a much more urban feel.
We feel that certain things could be changed with our ancillary tasks such as the text maybe, as we havent used a text that really links in with the video, we feel that maybe if we used a better text it may have made the whole thing that little bit more effective.
We used a black and white theme to make the cover feel more urban, like the band in itself, we feel colour could have been added but we didn’t know if this suited the band.
We also made advert covers and decided to make them simple, but we feel they are effective, I think a little more planning could have gone into the advert, but the simplicity that we have used gives it an appropriate feel, most of all the ancillary tasks suited the bands video that we made and we feel that this is a very effective quality as when an audience reads the ancillarys then sees the video they have a good chance of picking this up.

Evaluation Questions!

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

When trying to get audience feedback, we used a few different techniques such as;
Facebook, Youtube and general surveys of family and friends. Mostly we had good comments but we are not sure wether or not these comments came just as friendly gestures. We did'nt really aim our questions for feedback to a certain audience we wanted a range of answers and a range of constructive critisism from as many people as possible.

From the feedback me and my partner have learnt alot. We have a had a few comments from people saying that they really understand the links between the band and the story, this was a brilliant achievement for me and my partner as this was one of our biggest aims. This also means things like editing was of a ggood standard otherwise the audience never would have understood the story etc.

From a more technical point of view we had a lot of good comments about our editing saying that it all makes sense, and that all lip syncing is of a high standard. Many comments followed this saying that for the editing to make so much sense alot of attention must have been paid to the planning, this was good to hear also as we did put alot of time into our planning and its good to hear that its paid off.

We also got a bit of constructive critisism, most of which is people noticing that a camera wobble within thte video, we feel it is good in a way that people have noticed this as it means that people are paying attention to our video throughout. This made me and my partner think in many ways such as maybe a double check of shots would have been appropriate?

Overall we had really good feedback and me and my partner are glad that we stuck with our ideas and its paid off, were glad that the sheer simplicity of our story line has managed to get such good reviews, but most of all we have learnt that a good plan sets an extremely good base for a good video.

Evaluation questions!

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media texts?

I feel that My music video uses a lot of real media texts.
For example in the planning of my Video It was decided that there would be Know main attraction in the video. Me and my partner wanted there two be to attractions, the band and the story. We did this because We took our research into account and realised that a lot of other music videos by this group used this technique. We tried to challenge forms and conventions by using out of ordinary mes - en - scene, We used dark backgrounds along with light backgrounds to really make a differnece between the band and the story!
We used stereotypical band qualities such as skinny jeans and branded shoes to keep with real media texts, we felt this would give the video a real good urban feel, just like the band do in all of there other videos.
Another way in which we challenged the forms and conventions is by using special effects to make sure that we had the viewers attention at all times, we used flashing lights on the artists face to make the viewer really pay attention to him and what he was saying. Me and my partner never changed our ideas throughout planning as we new from the word go that our song and video could either challenge or match the real media texts.

preliminary video

As a practice For my main video me and a peer decided to make a sweded film tailer for 'Harry Potter and the philosophers stone' we tried to use a range of techniques and shots so that we would get as much practice as possible for our main video. It was a lot of fun to make and has given me a lot of ideas for my main video.

Editing

me and my partner have just recently finished editing and alternated time on the laptop where both myself and my partner took it in turns to edit, sometimes we had disagreements but we would both edit that part and decide whose was better. We looked at previous assignments and asked for help with some of the band footage as the background wasn't dark enough for us. We were fortunate enough to get feedback from other media students to drop the brightness and slightly increase contrast to give a more live raw feel to the band and decrease the backgrounds brightness. Looking at other music videos with how they have cut and fitted the story in with the music was important. Also by fitting the instruments with the timing of the song and making sure that it was the correct time for that instrument to begin playing. We are now just fitting the titles for our media video and also burning to disc, the following music videos are the ones researched and what i have gained from watching them.

Bloc Party Banquet

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm5Li08_ie8

We tried to record many angles similar to the banquet video but our equipment wasn't as good nore was the resources available but we have been editing in similar ways by making quick, fast and straight cuts to keep the tempo of the song going fairly fast. The only transitions that were used was "overlap" and this was in our story section of the music video.

We did try having the band footage in black and white but due to the quality of the camera and the movement from the band shots there was alot of blur motivation and didnt look professional enough to us.

Arctic Monkeys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEukS2YN9B8

This is the original music video for the song that we are doing. It is a story where a girl is desperate for a man and try extreme lengths to get one. We took this idea and changed it to where a main cannot decided what girl he wants and the story unfolds during the video.

There are alot of straight cuts in this music video to ensure the tempo and during the long shots that are in there, there are right to left push tranisitions and alot of "Flashes" to create a similar effect to an instant fade in. We have used many straight cuts in our music video similar to the original and instead of the few push transitions we used "overlap"

Advertising research

To make my advertising page as best as possible me and my partner put a lot of effort into research, we felt that researching the correct advertising for our genre would make it a whole lot easier to create an advertisement. Most bands of this genre are made to look really urban when advertised about we took this into account when creating our own. bright colors are used to express words of meaning we have also took this into account!

Final Advertisement

This is my final advertisement for my Band..
I have decided to keep it very basic but feel at the same time it is still very effective.
I used two actors that featured in the song video and got them to bite the album cover which I used for the music video itself. I feel that this has a really good efffect for the advert as a band cant be better advertised than actually using the band in person!
I used the advert to full advertise the bands album that I have created but wanted to give a good feel about the band to the audience therefore I used a humerous picture...
Hope you enjoy!

Album cover research

During our research we tried coming up with controversial album covers to reflect the band, then we both decided to recreate the original album cover and slightly change it. The other idea was to just create a similar album cover to the rest of the genre and have the bands name in a different text with a contrasting background.

The idea is to have a med to close up photo of a male smoking. with the band name in a different style of front compared to other bands to create a identity and to make sure it is on a contrasting background to stand out to the audience.

Album Cover

This is my final piece album cover. I used photoshop to make the album cover, I used certain features in photoshop to make my album cover better than the original such as skin healing etc. I feel my final piece has a better effect than the arctic monkeys one itself. I got the writing from a website called tatoowriting.com it let you write a sentence then transform it to what ever style of writing you wanted, then you just copy and paste to wherever you want!

Drafting album cover

In todays lesson I have drafted an album cover on photoshop just to get a real feel of what I will be doing etc. I feel strongly that I know exactly what i'll be doing for an album cover, Me and my partner have agreed on pictures and text also.

Team work recording

We are nearly finished our recording now, only one more shot to catch as the last time we caught it wasnt quite what we wanted, we are now editing and will edit in the last shot at a later date. The following pictures are of me and danny filming and editing our music video.

In this shot Danny is filming a close up of the lead singer in the music video. Danny is holding hes phone in hes left hand as he was playing the music for the video from it so that the lead singer was definitley singing in time, this makes editing a whole lot easier.

In this shot I am tilting the camera backwards in front of the lead singer to make him look more dominant in the shot.

In this shot we are beggining our editing, we are talking about what scenes we should keep and wether the scenes are good enough to use in the video, if we do this together its alot more effective and we can both put equal amounts of work in.

Adding to album covers!

I have been looking at album covers in a similar category of genre to mine, this is too see what the bands use to reach out to there audience and how they grab there audience in to buy there album, I feel that looking at a band that are in the same genre as mine will be good as I will be looking to use similar techniques as them when designing my album cover.

Both bands have relatively simple album covers, with simple pictures and then the name of there band and the name of the album. I think the idea in the first album cover is to show off the bands name with it printed in large in the corner, where as in the second its to show more of the simplicity and qulaity of the band. I think this as the writing on the second album cover is in italic and is farely difficult to read at a quick glimpse.
Both album covers are named after a song on the album I will have to consider this when designing my album cover, as the name of the album will definitlely prove all important.

Album covers...

In trying to achieve an album cover that is effective, I have deccided to look at other effective and famous album covers. Hopefully this will help me to understand the way in which I should use phtographs etc.. It will also help me to recognise what helps the album cover to be extremely famous and well known.

The first picture is argued to be one of the best well known album covers ever, it is well known all over the world, I know this as people come to london and pose on this very zebra crossing for this very same picture. But why is it so famous and well know? I think the reason in which the album cover is so big maybe because the actual band in themselves were huge and well loved everywhere, but the cover is so simple yet effective. The picture shows the band walking across a zebra crossing and features the name of the band only in the corner, there is nothing flash but it can connect with any audience simply because of this.
The second album cover is for a rock/dance band, they are also an extremely well known band all round the world but there cover is a little more extreme just like there music. They have used a strange picture as there cover almost as if to show that there music is maybe strange and out of the ordinary too. Its extremely effective though, as it is so different it draws you in straight away and makes you want to take a closer look.
I will take both of these features (simple yet easy to relate too, out of the ordinary) into consideration when designing my album cover, as they are both very effective but in very differnet ways, maybe if i can combine the two mine will be even bigger?

Advert and album cover..

I will be looking and researching adverts and album covers and i will be using ADOBE PHOTOSHOP to create both products. I will need to create an identity for the band, look for music genre style and trends. I will create my album cover first and the following post will contain my research.

Recent class work

In recent class work we have been looking at amateur filming compared to proffesional filming. We watched a television programme called the gadget show, on the show the two presenters had the choice to either make an amateur film or a proffessional film, once they had decided and made the films the difference was incredible, it allowed us to see the difference in quality betweeen the films but it also gave us many ideas for our own video. The presenter who made the amateur video used new techniques to achieve different shots, such as putting the camera on a remote control helicopter to achieve high shots ect. This has made me start to think outside the box as im now wanting to achieve a much better range of shots in different ways...

Filming and Actors

During the planning of the music video we both had an idea of who will be available and be the best possible actor for the roles we had. We needed four boys minimum for the band action and all needed to look like the band genre,

Once we found the four memembers we identified that many of the music videos including gigs their clothing was always very casual, The way they have their guitars being held was also a factor they have their guitars very high up compared to other rock genres.
The other two girl characters that we needed also had to suit this genre the picture below shows the type of clothing that they would need for effective M-E-S.

taking key parts of the song into account!

Why creating this video the story will have to match the story being told in the lyrics to create a more powerful video or relate in some way. Lines that we have been looking out for and some examples --'Well my friend fancies you' - We will make sure there is two quick cuts between two characters to relate to the lyricsWe have created our storyboard to make it match lyrics and follow the story we are creating our first draft story board hopefully it will be ready by the end of the month including actors/actresses playing the roles.

Lyrics to leave before the lights come on!!

Well this is a good idea,He wouldn't do it if it wasn't,He wouldn't do it if it wasn't one.Well my friend fancies you,Oh what a way to begin it all,You said it's always exciting words to hearAnd we woke up together not quite realizing how,Awkwardly stretching and yawning,It's always hard in the morning,And I suppose that's the price you pay,Oh it isn't what it was,She's thinking he looks different today,And oh there's nothing left to guess now,You left before the lights came on,Because you didn't want to ruin,What it was that was brewing,Before he absolutely had to,And how can you wake up,With someone you don't love? And not feel slightly fazed by it,Oh, he had a struggle,And you woke up together not quite realising how,Oh but he's stretching and yawning,It's always hard in the morning,And I suppose that's the price you pay,Oh it isn't what it was,She's thinking he looks different today,And oh there's nothing left to guess now,Quick, let's leave, before the lights come on,'Cos then you don't have to see,'Cos then you don't have to see,What you've done,Quick, let's leave, before the lights come on,'Cos then you don't have to see,'Cos then you don't have to see,What you've done,Until tomorrow comes,I'll walk you up, what time's the bus come?I'll walk you up, what time's the bus come?I'll walk you up, what time's the bus come?I'll walk you up, what time's the bus come?

Research

While me and my partner have an idea on our music video I will be researching similar music video to continue with our ideas and what the video should contain.
This is 'The subways' and this was a low budget indie/rock video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkJZptg-iac&feature=channel
It uses fast energetic shots/cuts when the tempo of the music increase this is something to consider for my music video. It also slows down shots and cuts when it is on a slower tempo section of the song. It also has a lot of close up of guitars and equipment then full shots of the artist or band performing.
This is 'Bloc Party'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm5Li08_ie8
The most impressive aspect of this video is how the camera moves with music from left to right or up and down. It also uses quick zoom in and outs but very controlled, this would be a hard technique to copy but I could aim to attempt it by doing two takes so just incase i haven't got the shot i would like i have an extra take to fall onto. This also has many close up shots of the music equipment and close up of the band playing their instruments.
'The kooks'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwrq2o6Woiw
This song is a similar genre to the other two but completely different music video, it makes the band out to be 'ultra cool' or 'rock n roll' the lyrics are about loving a girl but the world hasn't been very nice to her. But the band are seen with other girls, playing a guitar in Paris, stealing and partying. This is to promote the band more then becoming an amazing video. But similar to the other two music videos above the shots are very short and some random close ups of instruments or other thing (lights, pavement, sky etc) are used as well.
This is Jamie T
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7ZB2jMkOaI
This is a mixture of the artist performing and a story in the back ground, it mainly consists of close up shots of the artist and the band then longer shots of the story to identify what is going on. The story most of the time relates to the lyrics in some way, maybe not in every shot but the idea of the song normally matches the video.
Conclusion
With the sort of genre i will be making a music video for i will want to use faster shots for a louder or faster tempo section of the song, then slower more steady shots of softer/slower sections of the song. I will need a lot of close up of the vocalist and music instruments to indentify the band. I will use longer shots to establish a story line if decided. I will have to make the band members look, "rock n roll" "cool""not bothered" this is how they are all portrayed.
I will continue reseach but my following blog will be looking at the lyrics of my music video.

The reason for our choice?

We have chosen Arctic Monkeys - Leave Before The Lights Come On for many reasons, such as its just a classic Indie/Rock song From a classic rock band, also the lyrics are very meaningful this is a big bonus as when creating a video for a song its a lot easier and much more fun when you can relate scenes to word. The song talks about a boy who gets a kick out of sleeping around with different girls and treating them badly etc. Our main idea for the video is to recreate the story but to add in band clips of our own too. We will be posting the lyrics so that you can get a greater understanding of what were talking about...

Final decision

Me and my partner have finally decided on our song that we will be making our final video on. it will be Arctic Monkeys - Leave before The Lights Come on. We are in the progress of brainstorming ideas for teh video as you can see in the picture I have uploaded in this post. We have used different coloured pens in our work just to make sure that our individual work can be identified easliy.

Lesson 2

In this lesson me and my partner have been brainstorming some ideas of what type of music we would like to do and also what type of video we would like to do. All of this information will be put up on an upper coming post.
Some of the ideas were
-Chase and Status ft Plan B (pop/garage) This song is an emotional song and would be ideal to tell a story. It was also used in 'Harry Brown' Film what has recently been out in cinemas.
The idea was to create a 'Accident' where the artist will emerge and a flash back of his life until up to the event.
"I know when I knock
I'll be hoping I don't drop
To a place where I will rise, like before"
This story will be ideal for a character in regret he is coming to the end of his life and he doesn't want to die because he realises that he has done wrong. This is our first idea and we have been looking into others..
Other ideas will also be posted soon.... :)

researching genres and music videos

Research
whilst i have been Looking at different types of music videos I have been seeing a pattern with the genre and the video matching the music. Many songs use the video to help tell a story about the song this is where the video matches the lyrics. Other videos help increase emotion or the feel of the music this is where the video matches the music.

I have researched four types of music that I could use for my video, this is what i found:

Country Music
Most country music tells a story whether it is about love or violence. Many Videos reflect and create a story in the video to get the meaning of the song across even more.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTNKiAj1twc

Hip/Hop – Rap
In this genre they tend to talk alot about pain and showing off, many lyrics talk about “rags to riches”. The Videos are normally the rapper or singer showing of cars, money, women etc.. I think this is to make young children feel this is how they want to be when they grow up. There are normally alot of close ups normally close ups of the rapper then distant shots to show all the stuff he has, I think this is a good method of showing everything he has as it makes him look far superior to anything or anyone else. There is normally a lot of modern dancing and girls around the main artist. If the artist is singing or rapping about pain they still will have expensive jewelry and clothing on to show off.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GO22Z0T3qPE

Rock/Indie/alternative

Indie music (rock) usually consists of bands performing etc.. the videos usually match the music and sometimes the lyrics. The video will sometimes tell a story but shots of the band will still be used. In a lot of cases the videos will use shots of the band performing live this is a stereotypical rock video. Many videos are just shots and cuts from live performances i feel this gives a more energetic feel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxjuJNHGSNY

Pop
This is a mixture of many genres, pop doesn't have a stereotypical music video, other then well groomed and clean cut artists and dancers. Many videos will have dancers and the artist dancing in sync, it will usually have a catchy chorus and normally the song will become repetitive at the chorus to match this, an example of this is : Cheyl Cole - Fight for this love. This song is a great example as the artist repeats the chorus over and over and in the video repeats the dance over and over.

Back again!

I am now studying A2 Media and have started a new module.I will be creating a promo music video of my choice and creating two of the following to go with it:
-Band Webpage
-Cover
-Magazine advert

If I would like to use someone else's music I will have to ask for permission, for this reason I will be creating a twitter account to get into contact with bands or other artists. I will show my research and development throughout this module, I will also be showing my roles with my partner (Danny), we will clearly show our roles and involvement throughout this project.
